Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these medications should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
